Soft Washing vs. Pressure Washing: Understanding the Difference
What is Soft Washing?
- Soft washing is the alternative to pressure washing. It uses bio-degradable chemicals which sanitise the surface on which it is sprayed. It uses no harsh pressure which could further decompose the render. The clean lasts longer when compared to any other type of cleaning method.
- Soft washing is the careful blending of three liquids, water, sodium hypochlorite and soaps. Water at 97%, sodium hypochlorite at 2% and soap at 1% is the most common mix for render cleaning projects.
- Specialist soft washing equipment is manufactured in the USA and used in the UK by accredited professional soft washing companies.
- It uses quiet 12-volt battery powered low pressure pumps to apply the solution.
What is Pressure Washing?
- Pressure Washing has been around for more than one hundred years. It relies on both water flow (amount of water) and water pressure to clean surfaces. Careful training must be undertaken to avoid damaging delicate surfaces.
- Because it relies solely on water a pressure washing can get through copious amounts of water in a day. A typical commercial pressure washer will use nine thousand litres of water per day.
- Pressure washers provide a low cost of entry into the exterior cleaning business for anyone to experiment with. Pressure washers can be found for as low as fifty pounds although professional grade pressure washers can cost ten, twenty even fifty thousand pounds.
- Pressure washing contractors typically use noisy petrol or diesel engines to power the pressure washing pump.
Where to use Soft Washing
Soft Washing is best used for any surface which is covered in organic matter such as mould, moss, lichens and any other such material. This includes:
- Render
- Cladding
- Wood
- Driveways
- Patios
- Roof Tiles
- Decking
Soft Washing has been developed over thirty years to remove organic stains from these surfaces without causing damage.
How to Soft Wash
- Prepare the Area: Protect any surrounding plants and grass from the cleaning solution. Watering them to avoid any contamination.
- Prepare the Solution: Mix the soft wash solution in a SoftWash Blend module.
- Apply the Solution: Evenly spray the soft wash solution over the entire surface using a light activation coat first. Re-apply the soft wash solution to ensure even coverage and a 100% kill ratio to all organic matter growth.
- Rinse the Surface: After treating the surface and sanitising it. Gently rinse off the soft wash solution with low pressure water through a hose.
The cleaning solution treats the infested area, allowing it to sanitise the surface effectively without the need for high pressure. This method ensures a gentle yet thorough clean, restoring surfaces to their natural colour and condition. *
